Akawui & Swizl Jager Release Mapuche x Māori Anti-Imperial Anthem “Breath Of Fire”
When Swizl Jager met Akawui at the Tkaronto International Indigenous Music Summit in 2024, he was immediately drawn to the original 2022 version of “Breath Of Fire”, and the two artists agreed to collaborate on a remix - representing not just a musical partnership, but also a solidification of the bond between two Indigenous nations - Māori of Aotearoa, and Mapuche of Chile.
“Breath Of Fire” is a statement of resilience, acknowledging not only the Māori and Mapuche people’s shared history of colonisation and struggle, but also their steadfast resilience in the face of imperialism. The topical significance of this statement is not lost on the artists, who are seen waving a “Free Palestine” flag in the song’s music video, and who have pledged to donate 100% of the proceeds of this song to assisting in Minas’s family’s safe passage from Gaza.
