Passing Through finds a new home at the Charlotte Museum

Artists For Others are excited to announce that the Charlotte Museum is our new home for Passing Through!

The Charlotte Museum is the world’s only lesbian museum. Founded in 2007, the Charlotte Museum exists as a way to represent the lives of ordinary lesbian sapphic peoples and communities. They are a museum, gallery, research library, and document archive.

The Charlotte Museum upholds the importance of existing as a safe space for the queer community as a primary focus, and our kaupapa meet with such synchronicity, we could not have found a better place to host Passing Through going forward.

Passing Through is a primarily music focused program, but occasionally explores other creative outlets as well, most recently we hosted a 2 week introduction to crochet, and other workshops such as dance, and Raranga Harakeke are coming soon! Our next session will be a voter enrolment party this Thursday, August 20th.

Facilitated by Jujulipps and Otherwoman, with guests such as JESSB, Passing Through is a program by the queer community, for the queer community. Expect chats and laughs, free kai, and the chance to upskill and build community while following your creative passions!

Whether you’re LGBT or an ally, youth or youthful at heart, there are no identity requirements for participation. Passing Through is a safe space for any who want to join. All are welcome, hate is not.

No sign up necessary, just pass through, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Meantime Presents: Climate Crafts

The most recent workshop to come out of Meantime’s Maketime initiative, supporting rangatahi to create, execute, and manage their own events, Climate Crafts is a series of 4 workshops located around Tamaki Makaurau, culminating in a gallery exhibition and competition “This Comp Is Trash” for workshop attendees to showcase their creations.

Climate Crafts offers space and guidance for participants to learn valuable skills in mending and upcycling, as well as try their hand at creating art from household materials that would otherwise end up in the landfill.

The second workshop in the Climate Crafts series takes place this coming Saturday, August 8th at OMAC in Otara from 2pm-6pm!

Meantime Presents: Recharge Space

Got work you need to get done? Need a space where you can relax without distractions, lock in, and focus alongside other people with similar goals to hold you accountable?

Meantime’s most recent Maketime workshop was focused on third spaces, encouraging young people to think about what a third space means to them, and what they feel is missing from their lives outside of school, work, and home.

Recharge Space was one group of high school students' solution to that question, with the goal of providing a place where students and young people could come together and focus on productivity without outside distractions that are so often present at home, school, and places like the library.

If you’re in search of somewhere to study, journal, or create, swing by the Fickling Convention Centre every Wednesday in August from 4:30pm-7:30pm. Food, and materials will be provided.

More information can be found on the Recharge Space instagram @ourrechargespace

Sumud Ensemble Acting Classes

For the past two years, Sumud Ensemble has been creating theatre, festivals and community events in solidarity with Palestine, bringing together Palestinian, Māori and Tauiwi artists to tell stories, build community and imagine liberation together.

Now, Sumud Ensemble has found a home at Corban Estate Arts Centre in West Auckland and is launching a new Tuesday night acting programme led by actor, director and theatre-maker Acacia O’Connor. Through improvisation, devising and ensemble work, participants will collaborate towards the creation of an original performance piece.

Whether you’re a seasoned performer or have never stepped on stage before, these classes are an opportunity to connect with a vibrant community of artists and activists, deepen your creative practice, and get involved in the movement for Palestinian liberation through theatre.

Acacia O’Connor has spent years teaching young people and adults across Tāmaki Makaurau and has led productions including My Name is Rachel Corrie and Tales of a City by the Sea. Sumud Ensemble believes that art can be a space for resistance, solidarity and collective care.
