Financial Report
Our financial year ended on March 31st 2026. Below is our full financial report for our first year in operation. These details are also publicly available at register.charities.govt.nz
In case you’re not super in to reading spreadsheets, here’s a more digestible breakdown:
In our first year, our total income was $49,121. (amazing!)
$27,396 came from donations, koha, and other fundraising. (that’s you guys!)
$20,000 came from service delivery grants. (that’s the rule foundation!)
$1,725 came from commercial activities. (capitalism. lame.)
These funds were spent in the following ways:
$5,567 on fundraising costs (venue hire, food, advertising, etc.)
$8,734 on employee remuneration (facilitators for our programs, security for events, etc.)
$322 on volunteer related costs
$750 on costs relating to commercial activities
$3,734 on “Other costs relating to entity objectives” (a vague category, but for us this year, it included $3,446 as artist cuts from the Palestine art auction we ran last august, and $288 on food for Passing Through)
$809 on “Other cash paid” (this one is literally just bank fees, payment processor fees, and our squarespace subscription for the website. If anyone reading this would like to volunteer their time to build a website without using squarespace, send us an email!)
AND the big one! $19,621 went to Grants and Donations PAID!
This breaks down as $14,714 paid to Minas Al-Ansari to support her family in Gaza,
and $4,907 paid to HDE Foundation to support their work in Democratic Republic of Congo.
For Context: as of March 31st, our events had raised a gross total of $27,396, broken down into 3 categories.
$19,401 Artists For Palestine Fundraising
$6,843 Artists For Congo Fundraising
$1,115 Artists For Others Fundraising
After deducting fundraising expenses, and artist percentages (which were advertised at the auction) we were able to donate $19,621. This means that on average 71.6% of donations went directly to beneficiaries, with Artists For Others taking a 0% cut.
Artists For Palestine donated 75.84% of funds raised.
Artists For Congo donated 71.7% of funds raised.
The lost percentage is broken down as follows (also available in the below spreadsheet, and on the charities register):
$1,185 went to venue hire costs.
$3,384 went to purchasing materials such as signage, t-shirts (which were then sold for profit), posters, and flyers.
$348 went to postage, mailing people their art, and raffle prizes.
$650 went to hiring sound gear for Artists For Congo.
$2,065 went to staffing costs for both Artists For Congo, and the Artists For Palestine Auction.
$3,446 went to Artists who contributed pieces to the auction.
$322 went to food and lanyards for volunteers.
For a total of: $11,400. $7,775 of which was deducted from donations, and $3,625 was paid for by Artists For Others.
Staffing costs for Passing Through, general management, and other bits like some food and advertising costs were paid through our $20,000 grant from the Rule Foundation. As of March 31st, our bank balance was $9,388.
A full comprehensive breakdown of spending can be found in the table below. (Not included in this table is the financials from our fundraiser for the Sumud Flotilla, as it took place after the end of our financial year! Stay tuned for a breakdown of financials from March 31st - July 31st in our next Newsletter!
For the sake of full transparency, four months of running weekly programmes later, as I write this our bank balance is sitting at $1,561.28, with a $779.00 Squarespace subscription yearly renewal coming on the 6th of August.
Our weekly cost to run Passing Through is broken down as follows:
Facilitation - 3x Facilitators @ $30/hr x 4 hours ($360)
Food - $25 budget
Venue - $109/session
Total: $494/week
We are always pursuing grant opportunities, and always hopeful. We’re aware that everyone is struggling right now, but if you’ve made it this far in the report and you have something to spare, we’re always accepting donations, and we have music, art prints, and t-shirts available, all of which enable us to continue delivering programmes on a weekly basis.
